Freshman Jack Kyle picked up his first collegiate win while juniors Brad Kerkhoff and Kevin Pape also posted victories, but visiting Luther College took advantage of a pair of open weights and added four pins to knock off the Buena Vista wrestling team, 41-10, on Friday night inside Siebens Fieldhouse.
Kyle, who transfered to BVU at the start of the new year, had wrestled just five matches since joining the team. He got BVU on the board at 141 pounds when he posted a 15-9 major decision. He led 4-3 after the first and then added a reversal and takedown in the second to go in front 8-4. He secured the bonus point win with a takedown and a two-point nearfall late in the third.
Kerkhoff overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a reversal to square things up after the first three minutes. He then registered an escape and takedown in the second to make it a 5-w lead before closing the match with a four-point nearfall and riding time for a 10-2 triumph.
Pape fell behind 6-0 before he came on with a big four-point nearfall in the final minute to escape with an 8-7 comeback victory at 184 pounds.
Luther improves to 9-7 (4-4 IIAC) while Buena Vista wraps up the regular season at 1-9 (0-8 IIAC).
The Beavers will send a handful of wrestlers to the Central Last Chance on Saturday, and then will be off until the NCAA Central Regional Championships on Saturday, February 24, in Dubuque.
