Buena Vista Women Look to Keep Hot Stretch Going

The Buena Vista women's basketball team has had four starters score in double figures in four straight games, and the team is looking to keep that trend going on Wednesday night when it goes on the road to play the University of Dubuque in a 6:00 p.m. contest.

Game Notes:

-- IIAC Recognition: Claudia Larsen was named the Co-IIAC Performer of the Week for the second straight week.  Prior to her consecutive recognitions, BVU had not had a performer of the week since Malarie Gilley back on January 5, 2014.

-- Second Chance Opportunities: Buena Vista has 10-plus offensive rebounds in all but three games this season.  It turned in a season-high 17 against Central this past Saturday.

-- The Hot Hand: Larsen has made 44 of her last 70 field goal attempts over the last six games (62.8%).  She had made just 40 field goals total in the first seven games of the year.

-- The Fab Four: Buena Vista has had four starters score in double figures in each of the last four games. During that stretch there have also been six double-doubles and one triple-double from that group.  Larsen has led the group during the streak with 19.0ppg11.3rpg and 6.5apg.  Jasmine Demers is right behind at 17.8ppg and 9.8rpg.  Holly Schneider (17.0ppg) and Morgan Muhlbauer (16.8ppg) are also among the list.

-- Fast IIAC starts: Buena Vista is 3-1 in IIAC play with its only loss coming in the opener at Simpson (57-48).  Is the second straight year the team has jumped out to a strong start in conference play.  It began the 2016-17 campaign at 4-0.


Last Time Out: The Beavers outscored visiting Central 33-13 in the fourth quarter on Saturday en route to a 91-76 victory.  Larsen registered a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists.  Demers registered 20 points and 12 rebounds while Muhlbauer matched a career-best with five made three-point buckets and scored a team-leading 22 points.  The 91 points were the most the team has scored in conference play this season.

The Spartans were outscored in the second quarter at Loras last Wednesday, 22-8, and were never able to recover from there en route to a 73-59 loss.  Cece Pope scored a team-leading 11 points in the contest.  The team was looking to win consecutive games for the first time this season after a non-conference win against Shenendoah on December 30.

About Dubuque: The Spartans have just three wins on the season but two of those have come on their home court, including a thrilling 88-86 Iowa Conference victory over Simpson College back on December 6.  The team then dropped four straight games following that win before closing out its holiday trip to Tennesse with a 73-56 win over Shenendoah on December 30.  Abby Meyer is the only player averaging double figures at 15.6ppg to go along with 4.8rpg and a team-high 36 assists.  Morgan Boer is next at 9.7 with Cece Pope at 9.4ppg.  As a team, Dubuque is shooting just 34.7 percent from the field and has been held to under 30 percent from long range.  The team is also averaging 65.0ppg overall and during IIAC play.

About BVU: The Beavers are looking to extend its season-high four game win streak.  During the stretch, BVU is averaging 85.7ppg and has shot over 46 percent from the field in each game.  In four IIAC games, the team ranks third in scoring at 77.0ppg and in scoring defense (67.8ppg).  The team is also shooting just shy of 40 percent from downtown in those games which trails only Wartburg.  Morgan Muhlbauer (17.7ppg) and Jasmine Demers (17.4ppg) sit third and fourth, respectively, in scoring against conference foes with Muhlbauer leading the way in three-point shooting at 68 percent (17-of-25).  She's already set a career-high in three-point makes overall this season (32) surpassing her previous best of 25 set last season.  Larsen is fifth in field goal percentage (.490), third in assists/game (4.8) and tops in blocks/game (3.3).
