#9 Wartburg Hands BVU First IIAC Loss of the Season

The Buena Vista women's basketball team struggled to overcome a 34 percent shooting effort as well as 26 turnovers, and the Beavers fell for the first time in Iowa Conference play, 85-74, at home to ninth-ranked Wartburg College on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Morgan Muhlbauer turned in a career-high 18 points on the strength of her career-high five three-point buckets while junior Jasmine Demers led the way with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.  Holly Schneider chimed in with 11 points and Sidney Beckman added eight points and a game-high four steals.

The Beavers came out strong, building an early 13-6 lead.  The Knights, however, seemed to take control of the game during an 11-0 run and led 20-15 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.  The Beavers chipped away and eventually regained the lead at 22-21 before a three-pointer just before the end of the frame put Wartburg back on top 24-22.

The Knights continued with the momentum at the start of the second, scoring the first seven points of the frame to take a 31-22 lead.  BVU got back within 33-31 but Wartburg ended the half on a 10-2 spurt to take a 43-33 halftime lead.

BVU tried to hang tough in the second half, but Wartburg had an answer for nearly every BVU score.  After falling behind by 14 early in the second half, back-to-back three-pointers from Muhlbauer and Demers cut the deficit down to eight.  Demers later made her second long range shot to make it a 58-52 contest with 4:19 left in the third, but the Beavers were unable to get any closer than five the rest of the way.

Kristie Sommer led all scorers with 24 points for Wartburg while Katie Sommers was right behind with 23.

BVU did hold a comfortable 53-39 edge on the glass, including a 21-10 margin on the offensive end.

The loss drops the Beavers to 8-6 overall (4-1 IIAC), and they will now look to regroup as they travel to Decorah on Saturday afternoon to take on Luther College (8-5, 4-1 IIAC).  The Norse were off on Wednesday night after dropping their first IIAC game of the year (75-72) at Central College last time out.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
