It was a solid offensive performance by the Buena Vista softball team on Friday afternoon, and the Beavers used that attack to sweep a non-conference doubleheader at Greenville by scores of 13-5 (6 innings) and 9-8.
BVU came out firing in the first inning of both games and set the tempo early on. Jeanne Bramhall and Autumn Boland each had RBI singles before Kennedy Colvert drove in two on her single as the Beavers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. The Panthers cut their deficit in half with two runs in third, but that was as close as they'd get. BVU got those two runs back in the fourth before a Michaela Mason unleashed a grand slam in the fifth to break things open at 11-2. Greenville hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame, but it was too-little-too late.
The first four batters in the BVU line-up combined to go 10-for-17 in the game, as the Beavers outhit the Panthers, 20-5. Mason finished 4-for-5 and was a triple away from the cycle. She drove in five and scored three times. Freshman Carlee Guyett had two more hits, drove in two and also scored a pair of runs. Boland and Colvert each posted three hits with Colvert also driving in three.
Moriah Guyett improved to 2-0 inside the circle, pitching her second straight complete-game.
Colvert continued her big day with the bat to start the nightcap with a three-run double in the bottom of the first inning that highlighted the team's five-run frame to take a 5-0 lead. That's how things stood until Greenville cut things to 5-3 in the fifth. The Beavers got one run back in the bottom half when Boland singled up the middle. BVU then found itself trailing for the first time on the day when the Panthers tallied four runs in the sixth inning to grab a 7-6 advantage.
The Beavers had a response nearly everytime Greenville (2-8) posted a run. Guyett tied things with an RBI single in the sixth before Mckynze Hansen came through with a two-run single that made it a 9-7 lead. The Panthers threatened in the seventh with a run to make it 9-8, but left the bases loaded when Keely Bycroft recorded a strikeout to end the game to earn the win in relief.
Hansen had three hits and drove in four runs to help lead the Beavers at the dish. Guyett, Boland and Colvert each followed with two hits with Taylor Frain also adding a double.
Guyett now has 10 hits in her first 16 collegiate at-bats and is tied for the team lead with seven RBI's. As a team, BVU already has 17 extra-base hits through four games.
Marissa Promes got the start and worked the first five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high six. Bycorft pitched the final two frames and scattered six hits and was charged with four runs.
Buena Vista improves to 4-0 and looks to remain perfect on the year when it takes on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00pm. Both games will also be played at Panther Field on the campus of Greenville.
