The Buena Vista softball team began its 2018 campaign on Saturday night in thrilling fashion inside of the Rochester Dome by edging Northwestern-St. Paul in walk-off fashion, 4-3, before cruising to a 10-1 (6 inning) victory over Lake Forest College in the nightcap.
Freshman Carlee Guyett came through big in her first collegiate game with the game-winning RBi single to score Autumn Boland in the bottom of the seventh inning as she made a winner out of her sister, Moriah, who pitched a complete-game six-hitter, while striking out eight.
Guyett, who finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of RBI, gave BVU a 3-2 lead in the fifth on an RBI single for her first career hit and run driven in. BVU had four other players notch doubles in the game as the team totaled seven hits overall.
The Beavers took control of the nightcap from the start by batting around and scoring five times in the top-half of the first inning. Guyett had a pair of hits in the frame, including an RBI single for team's final run. Mckynze Hansen had a two-run double in the middle of it to make it a 3-0 advantage.
Lake Forest got one of those runs back in the bottom half, but BVU quickly regained momentum with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. The team then added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to end the game early.
Guyett finished 4-5 at the plate with two more RBI and a pair of runs scored. Michaela Mason added three hits and an RBI while Taylor Frain doubled twice and finished 3-for-3 with and RBI and two runs scored.
BVU outhit the Foresters, 14-2, and gave head coach Mandie Berneking her 60th career victory.
Marissa Promes made her BVU debut and picked up the win after pitching the first three innings and overcoming four walks by allowing just a run on one hit. Keely Bycroft came on in relief to toss the final three innings and allowed just one hit and struck out two.
