Trailing 5-3 with two outs in the seventh inning, senior Marissa Schmidt came through in a huge way on Monday afternoon with a game-winning, walk-off grand slam to dead center field to help cap off a doubleheader sweep of Simpson College. BVU took the opener over the Storm, 9-3.
BVU held a 3-1 lead entering the seventh but Simpson (5-25, 0-10 IIAC) plated four runs in the top half to take a 5-3 lead. ReAnn Cappel singled with one out followed by a single to center from Micahela Mason. After a flyout to left, Taylor Frain singled to the hole and shortstop to load the bags up for Schmidt.
It was Schmidt's lone hit of the contest as she went 1-for-4. Mason had three hits atop the lineup and scored twice while Cappel had two hits.
Moriah Guyett went the distance and earned the win for the Beavers to improve her season record to 10-5. She scattered 13 hits but struck out six and walked only one.
Schmidt got her day started by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the opener. The big blast came in the fifth when Keely Bycroft hit BVU's first grand slam of the day during a five-run inning that helped propel the team to victory. Bycroft went 3-for-3 in the contest with the four RBI and three runs scored.
Not only was she effective with the bat, she also got the job done with her arm, getting the start and pitching five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two. Sidney Davis went the final two frames.
Autumn Boland added two hits for BVU with sister Cheyanne also driving in one.
Monday marked the first doubleheader sweep of Simpson since 2001 and the first in Storm Lake since 1995.
Buena Vista improves to 16-12 on the year (4-4 IIAC) and will get set to host Nebraska Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon, April 18, at 3:00pm.
