The Buena Vista softball team was back in Iowa Conference play Wednesday afternoon down in Pella, Iowa, as the Beavers played a doubleheader at 14th-ranked Central College. The Dutch, who are currently atop the IIAC standings, swept BVU by scores of 2-0 and 10-5.
Game one was a pitcher's duel from the start, as the two team's combined for only six hits in the contest. Central broke a scoreless game in the fifth with a solo home run before adding an insurance run an inning later.
The Beavers, who were limited to only two hits, got the leadoff batter on in each of the final two inning as they tried to mount a late rally, but it was erased by a double play in the sixth and the Dutch got three straight outs in the seventh.
Keely Bycroft dipped to 5-7 on the year with the hard-luck loss inside the circle. She pitched a complete-game, allowing just four hits and striking out three.
BVU grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the finale, but Central rallied with a two-run single in the bottom half. The Beavers regain the advantage at 3-2 an inning later only to see the Dutch put up four runs their half.
Central added a run in the fourth to make it 7-3, and after BVU cut it to 7-5 in the sixth, the Dutch (24-4, 6-0 IIAC) made it a five-run final by answering with three more in the bottom half.
Bycroft doubled twice in the game and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Taylor Frain went 2-for-3 with a double.
Moriah Guyett falls to 9-5 with the loss. She went this distance and was charged with only four earned runs as BVU comitted a season-high six errors.
Buena Vista is now 14-12 (2-4 IIAC) and is scheduled to return to the field on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Simpson College (5-21, 0-8 IIAC) in a 1:00pm doubleheader.
