The offense was in full swing down in the warm Florida weather on Friday as the Buena Vista softball team began its 2017 spring break trip with victories over Carthage and Benedictine by 5-2 and 11-2 (5inn.) scores, respectively.
Senior Cheyanne Boland provided the late go-ahead boost in the opener with Carthage by blasting a two-run home run to dead center in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie. BVU then picked up an unearned run in the seventh for a 5-2 margin.
Marissa Schmidt put the Beavers on the board in the first with an RBI single back up the middle. She was then part of a double steal in the third which gave BVU a 2-0 cushion.
Carthage cut BVU's lead in half with a solo home run in the fourth before tying things up with a run-scoring double in the fifth.
Cheyanne Boland finished 2-for-5 at the plate with the home run, two RBI and a run scored. Michaela Mason also tallied two hits, including a double while scoring twice. Kennedy Colvert doubled for one of her two hits as BVU had five players chalk up two base knocks.
Keely Bycroft (2-0) went the distance in the circle, scattering six hits and allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
It was all BVU in the nightcap against Benedictine (1-1) as the Beavers scored five times in the third before adding three runs in both the fourth and fifth.
All nine batters tallied at least one hit for the Beavers, including Cheyanne Boland who doubled and drove in three runs. Mason went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored from the leadoff spot, while Schmidt added two hits and drove in two.
All five fo BVU's runs in the third were unearned, including a two-run single from Schmidt which made it 3-0. A double steal and a wild pitch made it 8-0 in the fourth before Boland's double in the fifth made it 11-2.
Moriah Guyett improved to 2-0 with a complete-game effort, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking only one.
Buena Vista is now 4-0 on the year and will face Elmhurst and Hope on Saturday at 1:00pm CSTand 3:30pm CST, respectively.
