Some timely hitting and dominant pitching helped the Buena Vista softball team begin its 2017 season on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader road sweep at Westminster College (Mo.). The Beavers picked up 3-2 and 4-1 victories, respectively.
Kennedy Colvert drove home BVU's first run of the year in the fouth inning of the opener, plating Keely Bycroft. The Beavers added a pair of key insurance runs in the fifth on an error by the Blue Jays followed by a Marissa Schmidt single up the middle.
Those two runs proved big as Westminster scored its only two runs of the contest on a two-run homerun in the home half of the sixth inning.
Senior Cheyanne Boland doubled twice and scored a run for BVU which was held to only six hits in the contest.
Bycroft picked up the win on the mound as she scattered just two hits over 5.1 innings of work while striking out four. Sidney Davis surrendered the two runs while allowing three hits over 1.2 innings.
The Beavers jumped on the board in the first inning of the nightcap as Schmidt drove in Michaela Mason with an RBI single. That was all until the fourth when Autumn Boland launched a three-run home run to make it 4-0.
Westminster got on the board in the bottom half with its only run of the game, and BVU worked around a late jam to secure the sweep.
Schmidt and Autumn Boland each had two hits for the Beavers, who totaled seven in the contest.
Moriah Guyett was in control all game long, pitching five innings, allowing just the one run on four hits, while striking out one and walking two. Davis again came on in relief and worked a pair of innings, scattering just two hits and walking one.
Buena Vista (2-0) will now be off until beginning its Spring Break trip in Clermont, Fla., beginning on Friday, March 17 with games against Carthage (2:30pm CST) and Benedictine (7:30pm CST), respectively.
