Buena Vista junior outfielder Stephanie Hayden has been voted as a Second Team Capital One Academic All-American as announced on Tuesday, May 20.
Hayden became eligible for the honors after being named a First Team Academic All-District selection earlier this spring. An Accounting and Sports Management major, she holds a cumulative GPA of 3.98.
To be eligible for Academic All-America ® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
The Prairie City, Iowa, native becomes the softball program's first CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American since 1998 (Andi Royster - First Team). She's also the first selection for BVU in any sport during the 2013-14 calendar year and is the only softball player from the Iowa Conference selected as well.
Hayden led the team and ranked seventh during Iowa Conference play with a .408 average, while batting lead-off. Her 20 hits during the 14-game IIAC schedule tied for third in the league.
For the year, she finished second in the IIAC with a .475 average and tied for second with 58 hits. She was also a First Team All-IIAC selection following the year.
