Fifteenth-ranked Wartburg scored 28 third quarter points to break open a 28-14 halftime game, as the Knights remained perfect on the year with a 56-14 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday inside of J. Leslie Rollins Stadium.
The Knights chalked up 232 rushing yards in the contest and finished with 519 yards of total offense. BVU had 361 yards passing but was held to only 37 net yards on the ground.
Junior quarterback Cole Miller had himself another solid day under center, completing 26-of-45 pass attempts for 345 yards and two scores. He now has 201 completions on the year and moves within six of Bobby Brown's single-season record of 207 set back in 2014. He did, however, move past Brown to set a new school record for attempts in a season (360) and moved into second on the passing yards list with 2,743. He needs 151 yards in next week's season finale to achieve that record.
Charlie Flickinger and TJ Lint each hauled in six passes for the Beavers with Flickinger edging Lint in yards, 64-63. Lint now has 62 receptions on the year which moves him up into fifth on the single-season list. He sits three back of fourth and needs five to move into a tie for second with Gunner Gilland (2014). Jalen Hennignsen holds the all-time mark of 83 set last season. He also needs just 78 yards to become only the fifth player in school history to reach the 1,000-yard mark in a single-season.
Miller hooked up with Colby Laughlin on a trick play during the first drive of the game for a 31-yard touchdown, as BVU took an early 7-0 lead. Wartburg, however, responded with a touchdown drive of its own, capped by a three-yard touchdown plunge to tie things at 7-7 with 9:32 left in the opening quarter.
The Knights (8-0, 7-0 IIAC) got a 38-yard touchdown pass with 6:33 left in the quarter before adding a four-yard touchdown run midway through the second to make it a 21-7 contest. BVU tried to hang around as Lint hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass from Miller to pull the team back within a score at the 6:03 mark of the second quarter. Wartburg, however, capitalized on a 3rd-and-13 with a 51-yard touchdown pass with just uner 4:00 left in the half to push its lead to 28-14 at the break.
A 27-yard touchdown pass followed by a 48-yard scamper blew the game open at 42-14 with 4:39 left in the third. The Beavers then lofted a snap into the endzone on a punt attempt which was recovered by the Knights to make it 49-14, and then quarterback Matt Sacia hooked up with Riley Brockway from 49 yards out on another 3rd-and-13 play for what end up being the game's final score with 1:33 left in the third.
Sacia completed 13-of-18 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns to lead Wartburg while running back Dylan Binion carried the ball 20 times for 160 yards and three scores.
Lint was also the leading rusher for BVU, carrying the ball twice for 55 yards.
Brady Illg and Michael Herwig each recorded nine tackles in the contest to lead the Beavers, defensively, with two of Illg's going for a loss. Peyton Imhoff added nine tackles for Wartburg which sacked Miller six times in the game.
Buena Vista dips to 3-6 overall, 2-5 IIAC, and will wrap up the season next Saturday at Coe College (3-6, 1-6 IIAC) in a 1:00 p.m. kick-off. The Kohawks dropped their sixth straight game overall on Saturday, falling 35-21 at Dubuque.
