After letting a 4-1 lead slip away late, the Buena Vista baseball team battled out of a pair of bases loaded jams and scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning before holding on in the bottom half, to knock off fourth-seed Loras College, 8-5, in an elimination game Thursday night on day one of the Iowa Conference Baseball Tournament played inside of Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.
Tyler Stoltze drew a bases loaded walk before Parker Truesdell followed with a two-run double down the left field line that gave BVU a 4-1 lead in the seventh. Loras, however, got two of those runs back in the eighth with a two-run home run to make it 4-3.
BVU was one out away from victory in the bottom of the ninth, but the Duhawks came through with a two-out double down into the left field corner that plated the tying run. Nick Henrichs took over for starter Egan Bonde, and after issuing a bases loaded walk, got a chopper back to him to end the threat.
Henrichs then worked himself out of another two-out bases loaded jam in the 10th, as the Beavers then erupted for four runs in the 11th. Bryce Rheault put BVU in front with an RBI double to right center before Devin Wagenman followed two batters later with a two-out single to left. Joe Rock blooped a single onto the line in left to drive in Wagenman before a bases loaded walk from pinch hitter Alex Savary made it 8-4.
Loras, which swept BVU in the regular season, didn't go down without a fight in the home half, putting the first two runners on after a leadoff error. After a sacrifice fly made it 8-5 with two outs, the Duhawks got the tying run to the plate, but Rheault, who made the error to start the inning, came up with a big throw on a slowly hit grounder up the middle to get the runner in a close play at first to end it.
Wagenman finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to help lead BVU at the plate. Coleman Roberts doubled twice and scored twice, while Truesdell also doubled twice, drove in two and scored a pair of runs.
The two teams combined for 26 hits in the contest and each committed one error.
Bonde went a career-high 8.2 innings for BVU, allowing four runs on 13 hits and received the no-decision. Henrichs (4-2) earns the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and walking three. Andy Bower came on to pitch the 11th and closed things out, surrendering an unearned run and working around a pair of walks.
The Beavers improve to 15-22 on the year and will advance on to play fifth-seed Luther (26-14) on Friday afternoon at 3:00pm.
